THE 9

Title: The 9
Author: James Patterson
Jan's Rating: 9

This is James Patterson's 9th book in the Women's Murder Club series and it is very good. Lindsay Boxer has 2 crimes to solve. 1) Someone is breaking into wealthy homes while people are entertaining (because they don't set their burglar alarm when they have company) so the thief is able to sneak into the bedroom to the safe and escape with a lot of expensive jewelry; 2) Some nut case is killing off young Mothers and their children in public places. This one bothered me the most because of the children so I had to stick with it to make sure the guy was caught and punished for his heartless crimes. It was a well-written and easy-to-read book.

HERO AT LARGE

Title: Hero at Large
Author: Janet Evanovich
Rating: 6

"Hero at Large" is Janet Evanovich's first book, published in 1987 and you can't find it in the bookstores anymore so it has been re-issued. It is a cute romantic story, and nothing like her Stephanie Plum series. It's a quick and easy read.

THE HELP

Title: The Help
Author: Kathryn Stockett
Jan's Rating: 9

95% of the books I read are murder mysteries so this book was quite different for me and I really enjoyed it. All my friends kept telling me about this book so I bought it and so glad I did. This is Kathryn Stockett's first book and it made the #1 New York Times Best Seller List. It is very well written and I have to wonder, will she write more books?? The story is about a young woman who returns home to Jackson, Mississippi after finishing college in the early 1960's. She wants to become a writer. At that time, anyone with money had black people working for them so she decided to write about the experiences of "The Help" in Jackson, and had to do it on the sly so no one would know because at that time, a white and black person would never sit down at a table together to share anything, much less write a book together. It was interesting from beginning to end. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

LUCID INTERVALS

Title: Lucid Intervals
Author: Stuart Woods
Jan's Rating: 8

I love Stuart Woods' books starring Stone Barrington as the main character, and this one was no exception. Stone only slept with one woman in this book, very unusual for him. Why he doesn't have some dreaded disease is more than I can understand. Anyway, in this book, Stone is hired by 2 people, one is Felicia (the one he is sleeping with of course), and she wants him to find someone before her employer finds him and kills him. The other person who hires Stone is Herbie Fisher, and if you have read the rest of the Stone Barrington novels, you know that Herbie is a thorn in Stone's side. However, Herbie wins the lottery and gives Stone $1,000,000 to be his lawyer. Stone wants nothing to do with Herbie but he needs the money because he is behind in his bills so has to take Herbie on as a client. The book is suspenseful and entertaining.

SIZZLING SIXTEEN

Title: Sizzling Sixteen
Author: Janet Evanovich
Rating: 8

I love Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum novels. This wasn't her best one but it was good. I love all the characters but I think Lula is my favorite for laughs. In this book, Vinnie, who owns the bounty hunter agency that Stephanie and Lula work for, has been kidnapped, and the kidnappers are threatening to kill Vinnie if the girls don't come up with the money that Vinnie owes them for gambling debts. The girls put theirselves in harm's way many times trying to free Vinnie, always with laughable results. I loved it and hope you will too.

DEEPER THAN THE DEAD

Title: Deeper than the Dead
Author: Tami Hoag
Rating: 7

Taking place in 1985, before DNA and looking up data on a computer, four 12-year-olds were running through the woods when one boy fell and landed on a dead body. The rest of the book is about the children dealing with the experience and the police trying to track down the killer, with the help of an FBI investigator. It was a pretty good book but more gorey than I like.

SAVING CEE CEE HONEYCUTT

Title: Saving Cee Cee Honeycutt
Author: Beth Hoffman
Jan's Rating: 7

This is a first book for this author and I enjoyed it, though it is different from what I usually read. It was light and entertaining so a nice change from the serious mysteries I usually read. It is the story of a 12-year old girl whose life changes drastically during one summer. Cee Cee is in charge of caring for her psychotic Mother until something terrible happens, then your heart will go out to Cee Cee and you will want to take her into your home. It is a sad but sweet story.

ALEX CROSS'S TRIAL

Title: Alex Cross's Trial
Author: James Patterson
Jan's Rating: 6

James Patterson has written a lot of books with "Alex Cross" as the main character and I have enjoyed all of them. This book is completely different. Alex Cross is NOT on trial in this book so first off, it was a deceiving title. Alex Cross is telling a story to his children about his great-uncle Abraham Cross and his struggles living in the South as a black man. The story was interesting and sad since I'm sure this actually went on at one time, but that is the only connection to Alex Cross in this book.

FANTASY IN DEATH

Title: Fantasy in Death
Author: J. D. Robb
Jan's Rating: 8

This is another winner for J. D. Robb as she keeps us in suspense wondering who killed the computer wizard who owns the company U-Play. Eve's husband, Roarke, helps her solve cases now and it's fun to watch their interaction, which gets pretty steamy sometimes.

KISSER

Title: Kisser
Author: Stuart Woods
Jan's Rating: 9

I LOVE Stuart Woods' "Stone Barrington" novels, but I have to tell you, Stone is out of control. He sleeps with every woman he meets! Hasn't he heard of Aids?? Jeez! Anyway, if you don't mind a lot of sex in a book, this is a real page-turner as Stone tries to solve yet another mystery for another sexy woman.

CHOSEN TO DIE

Title: Chosen to Die
Author: Lisa Jackson
Rating: 10

First I want to apologize because I have forgotten to post the last 4 books I read, now I can't remember what they were! Anyway, this is the first book I have read by Lisa Jackson and since she has written a lot of books, I'll be reading more of them. In this book, a female detective gets abducted by a crazed killer and you will be kept biting your nails through the book until you find out "who done it". I did not guess who the killer was so the ending was a surprise to me. It is 460 pages, but worth the read if you like a good mystery.
